North Node vs. South Node: Understanding the Dragon in Your Birth Chart
Imagine watching the Sun disappear in the middle of the day without knowing why. The light changes, shadows dance, and for a moment, the familiar world feels enchanted. Ancient eclipse stories imagined a great beast eating the Sun or Moon, a creature powerful enough to turn daylight into twilight.
That dragon has a place in your birth chart through the Nodes of the Moon. Its head speaks to hunger and craving; its tail to release and letting go. Exploring these points can lead us into territory familiar to shadow work: desires we struggle to admit and patterns we repeat without knowing why.
What Are the Nodes of the Moon?
The Nodes of the Moon are mathematical points, rather than physical objects like planets or asteroids. Called the North and South Node, they mark where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic, the plane of Earth’s orbit around the Sun. When a new or full moon occurs near these points, an eclipse can happen.
Each year brings four to seven eclipses, grouped into eclipse seasons roughly six months apart. They often happen in pairs: a solar eclipse, then about two weeks later a lunar eclipse, or vice versa. A solar eclipse happens at a new moon, when the Sun and Moon come together. A lunar eclipse happens at a full moon, when they sit opposite each other.
The Nodes always occupy sister signs at the same degree. Their horseshoe-shaped glyphs help you spot them in a chart: the North Node resembles a lowercase “n” (☊), while the South Node looks more like a lowercase “u” (☋).
The North Node: The Dragon’s Head
The North Node’s traditional name, Caput Draconis, means “head of the dragon” in Latin. Long ago, eclipses fascinated and terrified the people who witnessed them. Eclipse lore gave that fear a shape: the maw of a great dragon in the sky, eating the Sun.
The North Node relates to hunger, obsessive cravings, ambition, desire, dramatic changes, opportunities, and the rapid growth of the soul. At its root, this is a point of craving, closely connected to the material world. Something is missing, and we desire it deeply. This hunger can feel overwhelming, pushing us toward great achievements, breakthroughs, and personal growth.
Sometimes, this can be a very positive experience. Think back to when you wanted something so badly that you used all your willpower to achieve or experience it. The blood, sweat, tears, and sleepless nights resulted in something you felt proud of. In modern astrology, the North Node also represents qualities you’re learning to develop, often through experiences that pull you beyond familiar territory.
Not all personal growth comes with rainbows and glitter. Sometimes heartbreak, grief, or other shadowy aspects of our personalities fuel the process. After we’ve grown and healed, we may recognize what an experience taught us. While we’re in the churn of it all, though, the waters are rough.
The danger of the North Node is never knowing when something is enough. The dragon continues to hunger, and so we keep going for more and more.
The South Node: The Dragon’s Tail
The South Node’s traditional name, Cauda Draconis, means “tail of the dragon.” This point sits exactly opposite the North Node by sign and degree. If your North Node is at 25° Virgo, your South Node must be at 25° Pisces. Together, these sister signs form an axis that balances the themes of each Node.
The South Node relates to release, detachment, spiritual wisdom, and skills associated with past lives or early childhood. It also speaks to endings, separations, what we’ve exhausted, and the completion of karmic, spiritual, or behavioral cycles. At its root, this is a point of release, closely connected to spiritual ideas of detachment and grace.
You’ve honed a skill, practice, or pattern until it feels deeply comfortable, but you’ve also begun to stagnate. You know this place well, yet you don’t feel fulfilled. In some traditions, these skills are gifts from the lives you lived before incarnating into your current life. In others, the South Node shows what you inherited from your family and culture.
There is wisdom in that experience, and you can carry it forward. But when a familiar pattern has run its course, it can become a place where energy drains away. What once satisfied you now feels bland or exhausting.
Humans quite like patterns and familiarity. The discomfort of the South Node lies in knowing when to leave something behind fully.
The Nodal Cycle: The Sky Serpent
The Nodes move through a pair of signs for approximately 18 months, with eclipses following their journey through the zodiac. Near the transitions, eclipses can also fall in neighboring signs.
Nodal Returns: Coming Full Circle
The full nodal cycle takes about 18.6 years. When the Nodes return to their positions in your birth chart, you experience a nodal return. Your first happens around age 18 or 19, your second around 37, and your third around 56.
In astrology, nodal returns can mark periods of intense growth, letting go, and significant beginnings or endings. The desires and patterns associated with your natal Nodes come back into focus. Reflect on your experiences around those ages to get some insight into how the Nodes interact with your life.
Nodal Oppositions: Changing Course
On the opposite end is the nodal opposition. This happens halfway through the cycle, around ages 9, 28, 46 or 47, and 65. The Nodes in the sky reach the opposite positions from your birth chart Nodes. If you were born with the North Node in Virgo and the South Node in Pisces, the opposition reverses those placements.
We know the Saturn return gets a lot of attention, but consider the nodal opposition around age 28. Astrologically, this can be a period of recalibration, uncertainty, and crossroads. You may question where you’re going or discover that something you once wanted no longer feels right. These questions can overlap with the first Saturn return, which generally arrives around ages 29 to 30.
Another example is the opposition in your mid-to-late 40s, an age some associate with a midlife crisis. You may reconsider a career you’ve spent decades building, a relationship, or where you want to live. The changes won’t look the same for everyone, but the symbolism speaks to a deep reassessment of who you are and what you want.
The Nodes hold deep mystery and magic. Reflect on your nodal returns and oppositions as you dive deeper into your birth chart to see how the dragon moves through your life.
