This Rare Pluto T-Square Explains Why Every Generation Is Fighting
If you’ve ever felt like your soul decided to incarnate during one of the most energetically charged, change-inducing eras, you’re not wrong—and you’re definitely not alone. When it comes to collective values, subconscious drives, and cultural zeitgeists, humanity is just beginning to experience one of the rarest and most powerful generational tensions in recorded history. While astrologically, three planetary bodies—Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—define collective trends, a great part of the collective tension points to Pluto, the planet of power, evolution, and death and rebirth.
How Pluto Informs Generational Themes
Unlike the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, which move fast or relatively quickly in the sky, Pluto moves at a snail’s pace, taking 248 years to orbit the sun. This great length of time allows Pluto to do what it does best: to dig deep into the shadow side of its zodiacal host so that the truth can be revealed, processed, and alchemized into evolution.
Since Pluto is the planet of power, the zodiac sign Pluto occupies at any given time informs the invisible desires and psychological forces behind political systems, power structures, and wealth resources. For example, the Pluto in Cancer generation (1914-1939) focused on survival and establishing deep emotional roots, while the Pluto in Virgo generation (1958-1972) is characterized by a focus on health and analytical problem-solving.
Demoted to dwarf planet in 2006, Pluto doesn’t have a regular orbit like all the other planets do. Due to its elliptical orbit, it spends different amounts of time in each sign—traveling as long as 31 years in Taurus and as short as twelve years in Scorpio. This difference in transit length is what holds the key to understanding the Pluto generational clash of our times, which, by the way, is just beginning!
The Unique Geometry of the Current Pluto Clash
Every generation of people alive carries Pluto in the sign it occupied when they were born. That Pluto placement shapes the generation’s relationship to power—how they wield it, resist it, and what they are willing to protect and transform. But the story doesn’t end there. That specific Pluto placement will be activated, both positively and challengingly, by the ongoing planetary movements.
Over the 20-year transit of Pluto in Aquarius (2024-2044), the Pluto in Leo generation is scheduled to experience the Pluto Opposition, while the Pluto in Scorpio generation experiences the Pluto Waxing Square. This unique geometry showcases three Pluto placements forming what astrologers call a Fixed T-square between three of the most stubborn zodiac signs: Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. This rarity only occurs fully with these zodiac signs, due to Pluto’s elliptical orbit.
Those born during Pluto in Taurus (1852-1884) and Pluto in Gemini (1884-1914) didn’t get to experience the Pluto Opposition. It actually began happening, partially, with the Pluto in Cancer (1914-1938) generation. On top of that, many of those born with Leo Pluto (the baby boomers) parented Pluto in Scorpio children (millennials). The generational tension between the baby boomers and the millennials has been there all along—it’s just starting to get even more highlighted by Pluto in Aquarius, adding pressure to both, in the form of the fixed T-square mentioned above.
How Three Different Sets of Values Clash
For the Leo Pluto generation, power comes in the form of a strong, creative, and stoic individual whose personal success and fame are celebrated based on acceptance of earned or granted social elevation. For them, having a luminous leader with charisma is the goal, regardless, at times, of the results. In its shadow manifestation, Pluto in Leo can dive into an excessive focus on the ego.
For the Scorpio Pluto generation, who arrived during some of the darkest times in humanity—the AIDS epidemic and modern terrorism—there is no time for ego trips. Since Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio and spends the least amount of time traveling in this zodiac sign, the effects of this planet-sign combination are ultra-concentrated. The millennials were the first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic and are currently giving birth to Pluto in Aquarius children in the midst of a full-on environmental crisis.
How Pluto in Aquarius Requests the Reconciliation Between the Pluto in Leo and the Pluto in Scorpio Generations
Astrologically speaking, not all T-squares function the same. Those of cardinal and mutable nature may be easier to navigate, as cardinal signs are great at strategizing and initiating plans, and mutable signs are the best at adapting and embracing change. There is no doubt that the fixed, stubborn nature of both—the Pluto in Leo and the Pluto in Scorpio generations—is and will continue to be tested until 2044. In its worst manifestation, this clash can be about arguing endlessly. At its best, it can be about compromise.
In the end, these two generations are being called to embrace the current Pluto in Aquarius values, which are all about bringing a radical approach to power by questioning everything we believe in. Between 2024 and 2044, true human evolution lies in seeking to reform societal, political, and financial structures, only keeping what works and daring to truly ditch the rest.
True progress comes when we dodge division and confront issues of control and power related to individuality, equality, and freedom, as it has happened before during other Pluto in Aquarius cycles. History leaves no room for doubt: every time Pluto travels in Aquarius, concentrated power faces a collective reckoning. The Reformation, the American, French, and Haitian Revolutions—each cycle dismantled what had grown too rigid and rebuilt a better world in its place.
