Spring Equinox 2025: The Real New Year Has Arrived—Here’s How to Align

March will undoubtedly go down as the most astrological eventful month of 2025. Why? Well, where do we start? March 1 kicked off with Venus going retrograde in Aries. There was a powerful Virgo full moon lunar eclipse on March 14. The next day, Mercury went retrograde in Aries. There is an Aries new moon solar eclipse on March 29. The next day, March 30, Netpune moves into Aries for the first time since 1875. Not to mention several other significant daily transits throughout the month. Whew!

Sandwiched between the eclipses is one of the most exciting days of the year, International Astrology Day, better known as the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere. Every year when the sun moves into cardinal fire sign Aries, the official astrological new year begins, and we experience equal day and equal night, with the sun nestled exactly above the equator. Every year, this time brings the promise of new beginnings and fresh starts, and is the perfect time for a personal reset. So let’s dive into how you can take advantage of this fruitful energy.

Ease into Aries Season

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and a cardinal fire sign, embodying the essence of new beginnings. The four cardinal signs—Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn—mark the turning points of the seasons, with the sun’s entrance into each signaling a fresh chapter in nature’s cycle. This initiatory energy makes Aries season an ideal time for bold action, fresh starts, and setting new intentions. Aries, ruled by Mars, carries an assertive and fearless spirit, much like its symbol, the ram, which charges ahead without hesitation.

This fiery, go-getter energy contrasts sharply with the vibe of January 1st, when we traditionally celebrate the new year. During that time, the sun is in Capricorn, a sign ruled by Saturn—the planet of discipline, structure, and slow progress. While Capricorn season is great for laying long-term foundations, it doesn’t always inspire the same sense of momentum and excitement that Aries season naturally provides. That’s why Aries season often feels like the real energetic new year—full of passion, drive, and the courage to take on new challenges.

While Aries season always ushers in a spark of go-getter energy, this year, we have a few astrological placements slowing us down, and asking us to take our time as we move into the next phase of the year. So let’s take a look at the energy of the spring equinox 2025.

Spring Equinox 2025 – March 20, 5:01 am EST / 2:01 am PST

When astrologers want to look at the general energy of a particular day or moment in time, we cast a chart for the event, like we would for a person. The chart of the spring equinox 2025 has a Sagittarius ascendant or rising, which means the chart is ruled by expansive Jupiter, which is currently in Gemini. Sagittarius on the ascendant brings a sense of hope and optimism not only to the day, but to Aries season in general. We may feel inspired to explore, learn, and connect with people from different walks of life. The moon is also in Sagittarius in the 1st whole sign house, making positive aspects to Mercury, Venus, the sun, and Neptune, but sits opposite Jupiter. This fiery moon puts an emphasis on the emotional desire to jump into conversations, relationships, and our dreams. But warning! Both Mercury and Venus are currently retrograde, and Neptune is in the last degree of Pisces before it moves into Aries on March 30. What this means is that while we may feel ready to move forward towards new things, we need to take a beat, because now may not be the best time. Of course there are exceptions, and if you have projects, or situations in the works that you don’t have the luxury of pausing, by all means, keep the train moving. But generally, retrograde periods can slow things down, and may require a re-do or re-work later on.

Mars, the ruler of Aries, is direct after a retrograde period that started in December and wrapped in February, however, it’s still moving fairly slowly and is in Cancer, the sign of its “fall” in traditional astrology; which means it’s not at its full strength, and can’t act in its usual “martian” way. And Mars, being the planet that rules action, wants to GO. Mars currently makes a difficult aspect to Chiron, which means there is some active healing that needs to be done to move past our inner and potentially outer wounds. However, Mars makes a supportive aspect to Saturn the builder, currently in Pisces, encouraging us to take our time, get prepared, and be responsible when it comes to going after what we want. In fact, this is a great time to streamline, and get organized, especially coming off of the Virgo full moon lunar eclipse. With the moon opposite Jupiter, emotional overwhelm can occur if we’re not selective about where we put our energy. So our collective mantra for Aries season should be “ Less is more.”
