September New Moon Horoscopes for Living Your Best Life

On Sunday, September 9, at 11:01am PST, the new moon will be in Virgo.

New moons are a time for planting seeds, both literally and metaphorically. But before we get our gardening gloves on, it’s always good to put some thought into what we’re planting and why. After all, we reap what we sow… and this idea is especially important to remember during this September 2018 new moon in Virgo.

That’s because in the northern hemisphere, this mutable earth sign corresponds with the transition from summer to fall and the beginning of the harvest season. And like its namesake, the Virgin, Virgo is all about purity—not in a sexual sense, but in the sense of maintaining personal integrity and keeping intentions pure.

So when we plant our own seeds at this new moon, it’s important to make sure the intentions behind them line up with our highest values and ideals. The gap between who we are and who we’d like to be can feel painfully wide at times, but there’s always something we can do to narrow it. Just take things one small step at a time—an approach that comes naturally to thoughtful, meticulous Virgo.

What does the New Moon in Virgo Mean?

Ruled by analytical Mercury, this lunation is perfect for breaking down complex problems and finding simple, step-by-step solutions. After all, Virgo rules digestion—and that applies to facts as well as food. This sign teaches us to “digest” information by discerning what’s useful and discarding the rest. That way, we have the bandwidth to focus on things that really matter.

What really matters to Virgo is service … and this September new moon invites us to be of greater service to others by honing our craft or learning some useful new skills. The more practical, the better! And for health-conscious Virgo, nothing could be more practical than caring for the body, mind, and spirit. It’s not just about nursing others back to health, though—we can make ourselves a lot more useful if we take time to practice self-care.

Yes, “practice makes perfect” at this new moon. But in our quest for perfection, we can focus so much on the flaws that we miss out on the bigger picture. Don’t get caught up in “analysis paralysis”—Virgo energy is best expressed by simplifying things, not complicating them.

Horoscopes for the September 2018 New Moon in Virgo

Virgo

Finding inspiration for your next self-improvement project should be no problem, Virgo. In fact, at this new moon, the real challenge will be narrowing your focus down to just one simple, attainable goal. If that seems overwhelming, take a deep breath and remember: you may be a work-in-progress, but in this moment, you’re perfect just the way you are.

Libra

Balance may be your middle name, Libra, but that doesn’t mean it comes easily. The truth is, with so many different viewpoints to consider and so many contradictions to sort out, it takes a lot of work for you to arrive at anything resembling inner peace. If you’re overloaded with too much information (and these days, who isn’t?) take some time out at this new moon to process it all.

Scorpio

You’re not exactly what we’d call a “joiner,” Scorpio —it takes a lot for you to let your guard down. So before you get involved with a group, you need to make sure that they’re the real deal. But if you can’t find any group worthy of your participation, there a good chance you’re being too selective. At this new moon, consider lowering the bar just a little.

Sagittarius

A sense of purpose, a feeling of competence, a belief in what you do… these are must-haves for you, Sagittarius. And right livelihood is definitely a worthy goal. But in your quest for the “perfect” career, you may be missing out on some opportunities to do real, meaningful work. This new moon challenges you to take your eyes off the prize for a while and focus on the humbler tasks at hand.

Capricorn

It’s not easy walking a solitary path, Capricorn —you need something to light the way. Having a personal philosophy, code of conduct, or religious belief to live by can keep you honest and help you make sense of this crazy world. The last thing you need, though, is a lot of dogma and rules that make life even more complicated. This new moon offers you both structure and simplicity.

Aquarius

You know love’s not about keeping score, Aquarius. But if you want to have a healthy relationship, you’ve got to play fair—and nothing’s fair about a situation where one person does all the giving and the other all the taking. If the power balance in your relationship feels a little off, this new moon nudges you towards an arrangement that’s better for both of you.

Pisces

Unconditional love is truly divine, Pisces. But more often than not in human relationships, it’s the ideal—not the reality. And guess what? Maybe that’s OK. We’re only human, after all, so it’s probably unwise to put superhuman expectations on ourselves or our loved ones. This new moon reminds you to to keep your feet on the ground… but don’t be afraid to keep reaching for something higher.

Aries

We’d all like to think we’re invincible, Aries, but even daredevils like you have to take care of themselves. Whether it’s eliminating junk food, quitting cigarettes, or seeing a therapist, chances are there’s something you can do at this new moon to improve your health and wellbeing. It may not sound exciting, but it might make you a bigger badass—if that’s even possible!

Taurus

Hand-crafted creations that are both beautiful and useful. Sports that make you feel like a kid again, while getting you back in shape. Addictive puzzles and games that can help keep your mind sharp for years to come. Whatever floats your boat, Taurus, this new moon is all about pursuing pleasures with a practical purpose.

Gemini

We learn a lot from our families, Gemini —from the way we handle emotions, to how we set up our homes, or take care of ourselves and others. But not all of the habits we pick up in childhood end up working for us as adults. This new moon challenges you to weed out anything that no longer works for you, and replace it with something that suits your current reality.

Cancer

Flow charts, spreadsheets, bullet lists… you’ve got them for every occasion, Cancer. But not everything in life can be fit into neat little categories—and the more you try to make them fit, the more confused you get. At this new moon, try to save your brainpower for the really important questions and let the other stuff go.

Leo

“Need to haves” and “nice to haves…” It’s not always easy to tell the difference, Leo. But here’s a hint: if you’re not actually using it, you probably don’t need it. This new moon is a great time to sort through your possessions and simplify your life. Chances are, there’s a lot of stuff taking up space in your closet that could be put to better use by donating it to someone in need.
