Mercury in Capricorn: An Exchange of Ideas

The End of the Tour (2015)

We may feel up for some heavy reading this week, as wordsmith Mercury travels through the last degrees of achievement-oriented Capricorn. But if you can’t find time to read all 1,079 pages of Infinite Jest, don’t worry — there’s plenty of insight to gain from watching Jason Segel’s performance as the author David Foster Wallace in the 2015 film The End of the Tour.

Mercury conjoined Pluto yesterday and sextiles Jupiter in Scorpio today. Perhaps, like ambitious journalist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg), we’re eager to get that exclusive story—even if it means overstepping boundaries and asking intrusive questions. Or maybe, like reluctant interviewee Wallace, we’re wary of giving our secrets away, knowing all too well that knowledge is power.

This exchange of ideas can become heated tomorrow, when Mars enters Sagittarius. A lively debate can be fun and stimulating, but try to keep things on friendly terms.

Saturday’s Mercury/Uranus square pressures us to choose between our desire for establishment approval—like Wallace’s massive achievements in the literary world—and loyalty to our own eccentric, contrarian genius. A sextile to Chiron in Pisces on Sunday can complicate things by triggering our insecurities. Is it really selling out that we fear, or the success we’re not so sure we deserve? Don’t let “impostor complex” stop you from sharing your unique insights—there are people waiting to hear what only you can say.

Mercury will move into Aquarius next Wednesday, shortly after the full moon/total lunar eclipse in its opposite sign of Leo. Our long intellectual climb finally pays off—from here, we enjoy an unobstructed view of the future. It can get lonely at the top, though, so don’t forget to reach out for real human connection. Express yourself, not just from the head, but from the heart.
